The Whale Camp at The Fundy Marine Science Institute

1, 2 & 3 Week Sessions

All programs are available for adventurers ages 10 – 17. We operate on a three-week cycle, so after engaging in foundational activities at the beginning of your chosen session, campers all explore new areas and learn new content each week.

Basic One-week Fundy Ecology Includes:

  • Two days exploration at sea observing and researching whales and marine life; Whale research data collection.
  • Optional day-long trip to Machias Seal Island to closely observe Puffins, Razorbills, Murres.
  • Optional coastal kayak tour
  • Sensory awareness training
  • Activities for understanding (Level I): Fundy Tides, Whales and Marine Mammals, Pelagic Bird Species, Oceanography, Water Chemistry,Marine Biology, Plankton Propagation, Research Techniques, Tidal Zone ecology, Stream Ecology, Forest Ecology, Coastal Ecology, Regional Geology, Sailing and Navigation, Fishing Industry, Regional Culture.
  • Eco-tours to explore: Salmon aquaculture sites, Herring weirs, Geologic formations, Bogs, Beaches, Fishing Docks.
  • Lecture and Discussion Sessions on current whale research by Laurie Murison, Manager of the Grand Manan Whale and Seabird Research Station.
  • Team-building & Leadership initiatives (Level I).
  • Evening recreational games on beach and playing fields

    Intermediate Two-week Fundy Ecology Includes:

    • Four days exploration at sea observing and researching whales and marine life. Whale research data collection.
    • FREE day-long trip to Machias Seal Island to closely observe Puffins, Razorbills, Murres.
    • Optional coastal kayak tour
    • Optional weekend day-long or overnight/camping-on-outer-island kayak tour
    • WHALE RESEARCH DATA WORKSHOP – LEVEL I. Analysis of whale research data collected – geographic analysis of feeding patterns of marine mammals and birds.
    • Sensory awareness training
    • Activities for understanding (Levels I & II): Fundy Tides, Whales and Marine Mammals, Pelagic Bird Species, Oceanography, Water Chemistry, Research Techniques, Tidal Zone Ecology, Stream Ecology, Forest Ecology, Coastal Ecology, Marine Biology, Plankton Propagation, Regional Geology, Sailing and Navigation, Fishing Industry, Regional Culture.

      Full Three-week Fundy Experience includes: 

      • Six days exploration at sea observing and researching whales and marine life. Whale research data collection.
      • FREE day-long trip to Machias Seal Isand to closely observe Puffins, Razorbills, Murres.
      • FREE coastal kayak tour
      • Optional weekend day-long or overnight/camping-on-outer-island kayak tour.
      • WHALE RESEARCH DATA WORKSHOP – LEVEL I & II. Analysis of whale research data collected. Correlation of tides with geographic feeding patterns of marine mammals & birds.
      • Sensory awareness training
      • Activities for understanding (Levels I & II & III): Fundy Tides, Whales and Marine Mammals, Pelagic Bird Species, Ecology of Puffins, Terns and Auks, Oceanography, Water Chemistry, Research Techniques, Tidal Zone Ecology, Stream Ecology, Forest Ecology, Coastal Ecology,Marine Biology, Plankton Propagation, Regional Geology, Sailing and Navigation, Fishing Industry, Regional Culture.
      • Eco-tours to explore: Salmon aquaculture sites, Herring weirs, Geologic formations, Bogs, Beaches, Fishing Docks, Sardine Museum, Grand Manan Museum, Saturday Farmers Market, Mini-Golf, Saturday ferry trip to explore Whitehead Island, Behind the scenes tour of Grand Manan Whale and Seabird Research Station- meet researchers and discuss research.
      • Lecture and Discussion Sessions on current whale research by Laurie Murison, Manager of the Grand Manan Whale and Seabird Research Station. Team-building & Leadership initiatives (Levels I & II & III).
      • Evening recreational games on beach and playing fields

      Additional Offerings

      Weekend Excursions: For two and three weeks or longer campers. Hike and camp out on the remote back side of the island. Or, take a kayak trip to an outer island and camp overnight.

      College Credit Course for High School Students – Advance your opportunities for success. Choose our three-week program- Ecology of the Bay of Fundy and earn three college credits! The course takes place from June 30 – July 20, 2019.
